• 2013: Innovative from the start: East India Company archives in Jakarta

In 2010, The Corts Foundation, in partnership with the National Archives of Indonesia (ANRI), launched the DASA Project, the country’s first major heritage digitization initiative. Over 1.1 million pages of 17th and 18th-century Dutch East India Company (VOC) archives were digitized, unlocking invaluable historical knowledge. To support this groundbreaking effort, PT Aliz Dinamika (PTAD) was established in 2013. Since then, we’ve been at the forefront of heritage imaging and digital access in Indonesia.

  • 2017: Partnerschip with DE REE information management

DE REE is the largest provider of software for municipal, provincial and regional governement institutions in the Netherlands. From these clients, DE REE publishes more than 58.000 archival inventories, 1,3 million books and 4,4 million newspapers and magazines on a national website, archieven.nl, larger than Delpher.nl. In Indonesia we created arsip-indonesia.org for our clients in Indonesia. Although still small, it attracts more than 100.000 visitors monthly.

  • 2019-2021 Indonesia's biggest old genealogy collection saved

In the Moluccas (Maluku) we collected more than 400 volumes of baptism, marriage and confession registers from local churches on dozens of islands. The oldest records date back from the times of missionary Joseph Kam (in Ambon 1815-1833). We transported a i2S CopiBook A2 in special flight casings to the island of Saparua where we made a scanning studio. Most volumes were in a very fragile condition and could only be touched once. A total of more than 60.000 pages give acces to thousands of family names. So far the biggest genealogical source in Indonesia!

  • 2019: Ancient Javanese manuscripts from the Keraton of Yogyakarta

In 2019 we assisted to Keraton of Yogyakarta with (temporarily) publishing a collection of 75 old Javanese manuscripts online, in cooperation with the British Library where the originals are kept. For this, we implemented DE REE's information system in the website of the Keraton. Other components of the pilot project included manuscript digitization, wayang cataloguing in MAIS-Flexis, 3D photogrammetry.

  • 2018-present: Digital Documentation Centre at UKDW Yogyakarta

Old research data (theses), archives, inactive and forgotten book collections, photo albums, analogue card catalogues... every university has old analogue collections. When digitized, suddenly there is a wealth of research data available. We have created a Digital Documentation Centre for the History of Protestantism for the Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana (UKDW) in Yogyakarta including several synodal church archives from churches in Magelang, Salatiga and Malang. Every year the collection is growing with thousands of new images for research. A university is always famous for its collections!

  • 2021: A fascinating scientific collection: historical seismograms

The Indonesian Agency for Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics (Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika or simply BMKG) has an old collection of seismograms dating back to 1908. These oldest seismographic measures were conducted by the former Koninklijk Magnetisch en Meteorologisch Observatorium (KMMO) in Batavia/Jakarta. Digitizing 100.000 fragile seismograms was a challenge. The oldest ones are made of smoked, black paper and crumble easily. The graphic lines can only be accurately digitized when the sensor camera is perpendicular to the paper. For this the i2S SupraScan Quartz A1 was the very best solution.

  • 2022: start of a Paper Restoration Studio

For the start of a paper restoration studio our staff received training at the Nationaal Archief in The Hague and Hoogduin Paper Restorators in Delft. Inspired by our European suppliers, we started the production of quality A boxes and special ropes for the packing of archives. For the import of Japanese paper (in various colours and thickness) we have the necessary import licenses. Our first project concerned the heavily damaged 19th-century archives of the All Saints Anglican Church in Jakarta, founded by the missionary Walter Henry Medhurst (in Batavia: 1822-1842). More than 2.000 pages were carefully cleansed with alcohol, flattened with a small ironer and restorated with Japanese paper.

  • 2022-2024: the oldest Catholic archives rearranged and digitized

Together with the Catholic Documentation Centre of Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, we worked almost two years on the final cataloguing of a some of oldest and richest Catholic heritage collections in Indonesia: in Semarang the archives and photo collections of the Jesuit Order, the Brethern FIC, the Catholic Orphan House and the St. Joseph church; in Jakarta the archives of St. Vincentius. The work included the careful paper restoration of fragile 19th-century records of the Semarang orphanage. The archives will gradually appear online on the website of the KDC.

  • 2023: the start of a National Indonesian Theology Library

In cooperation with the Foundation Library Development Indonesia (LDI) in the Netherlands, we started digitizing large collections of (mostly inactive) theology book collections in theology seminaries in Abepura, Ambon, Banjarmasin and Jakarta. The aim is to give thousands of local church ministers and theology students access to thousands of books. After one year the general catalogue is online and at the end of 2025 there will be 650.000 digital pages online. With Optical Character Recognition software, automatic translation tools and AI, a variaty of interesting books in German, English, Dutch and Latin will become more relevant and give a boost to Protestant tradition and thought.

  • 2024: preservation of archives of Bosscha Astronomical Observatory, Lembang

In cooperation with the foundation "Kerkhoven-Bosscha Fonds" (LKBF, 1954) at Leiden University, we delevoped a digitization strategy for the valuable glass plate collections kept in the dome of the Bosscha Observatory (1923). Although the catalogues have been lost, the thousands of observations may still be relevant and analyzed with AI tools. We catalogued and digitized 13.000 pages of the earliest year reports and correspondences. Another contribution to preserve Indonesia's scientific heritage collections for future research.
